Competition
The SAE Baja competition is an intercollegiate design competition. Teams design and build a single-seat off-road buggy. All teams must use an unmodified 10 hp Briggs and Stratton Intek engine, which Briggs and Stratton kindly donates. Scoring for competition is based upon subjective design and cost reports, subjective design and sales presentations, as well as objective dynamic events. These events are Maneuverability, Rock Crawl, Acceleration, Hill Climb, and an Endurance Race that usually lasts 4 hours. Points are awarded for each event. The team with the most points wins the overall competition. Teams are allowed to run the same car for two years in a row.
2004
The Blue Car (CPX) marked the end of the SLA rear suspension. The team designed a “Lotus Unique†suspension in order to decrease the number of tubes and save weight.
2005
The Green Car, previously The Blue Car experienced a complete re-design of the rear end. This included a CNC machined gearbox and a major design iteration of the rear suspension.
2006
Blackjack received help from several students working on senior projects. Senior projects included Steering, Front Suspension, Rear Suspension, Front Uprights, and Brakes. Because of major rule changes, Blackjack’s frame is a completely new design as well.
2007
The 2007 car will reside on the frame of the previous car. Some systems will experience re-design.
Goals for 2007
- Improve Maneuverability
- Maintain or Decrease Weight
